How to Read a Food Label

Food labels give important nutritional and ingredient information about our packaged and prepared food product. Before you buy you can check out the levels of energy, fats, salt, sugar and carbohydrates in your food as well as the ingredients.

Nutrition information panel

On the food item you will find a Nutrition Information Panel and possibly some nutrition claims.

Ingredients
Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, starting with the largest amount first.

How can we use this information?

  • Comparing products
    Use the per 100g column to compare different products to work out which is the best choice for you. 
  • How much do you eat? Beware, the serving size on the packet may be different to the size you actually eat
